What Causes Eczema Flare-ups?
Question: What Causes Eczema Flare-ups?
Answer: An eczema flare-up is a worsening of an already existing condition. These flare-ups happen when a damaged skin barrier reacts to environmental, physical, or internal triggers that cause the immune system to overreact and send inflammation to the skin.
What Causes Eczema Flare-ups?
- gut-damaging food
- skin irritants
- dry skin
- allergens
- stress
- weather and temperature
- sweat
- infections
Gut-damaging Foods
Unhealthy foods that damage the gut are not only the biggest reason your eczema flares up, but they are really the reason you have eczema in the first place.
These foods create leaky gut, which is a term for gut damage that many people with eczema unknowingly have. When leaky gut is created, the connections holding the cells together in your intestines (called tight junctions) start to produce more Zonulin and allow gaps between the cells.
When tight junctions stop holding the cells in your gut together closely, foods you ingest can make their way into your bloodstream. After that, your body starts responding with inflammation because it sees those foods as a threat.
I used to have severe eczema before I fixed my gut; Now I am completly eczema free. Learn how you can do that too in The Ultimate Eczema Protocol.
Skin Irritants
Harsh soaps, detergents, shampoos, perfumes, fragrances, and toxic cleaning products can be very harmful for people with eczema because they strip natural skin oils and damage the skin. After your body comes into contact with these things, it responds with more inflammation, which creates more eczema.
In my opinion, these things are not healthy for anybody, and nobody should come into contact with them, but they are especially bad for people with eczema whose bodies are already damaged.
Avoid these skin irritants as much as you can, and try to make changes to less toxic and more natural alternatives to these products.
Here you can see my full list of non-toxic versions of these products.
Dry Skin
If your skin is dry, allergens will have a much easier time entering your body, which causes problems for eczema.
Make sure to use a natural moisturizer like beef tallow. Here you can check my list of the best eczema moisturizers and which ones I used when I was recovering from severe eczema.
Also, when your gut heals, your body will be much better at holding moisture in your skin, which will make your skin less dry.
Allergens
There are multiple types of allergens, including dust, pets, pollen, and mold. All of these can drastically worsen eczema if you come in contact with them. These allergens can cause flare-ups because allergies and eczema are extremely connected.
When you come in contact with these allergens, your confused immune system sees them as a threat even though they are not, which causes inflammation that shows on your skin.
How To Heal?
For years, I thought the only thing I thought I could do to make my already severe eczema better was to avoid the things that can cause me flare-ups. This created a lot of pain and anxiety because most of my days were spent avoiding things like pollen, animals, cigarette smoke, sweat, etc. I stopped being physically active, going to school, going outside, and being around people.
My doctors told me that there was nothing I could do except take useless medication that honestly made my eczema even worse.
After some time, I started doing my own research about what really could be an underlying issue that causes eczema.
Now, after years of suffering, I am finally eczema-free, and if you want to know step by step how I healed my severe eczema and how others are doing the same through my example, join The Ultimate Eczema Protocol, where you get access to all of the resources I collected over the years of research, and a community with people who understand you.
