Why Mold Worsens Your Allergies (And How to Stop It)

Mold is becoming a bigger and bigger problem everywhere in the world; it can affect your health negatively in multiple ways, but the most common way is allergies.

In that situation, most people would blame common allergens like pollen or dust, ignoring a much bigger and scarier hidden danger.

I had allergies since I was a little kid; at first, they were nothing unusual, but as I got into my teens, they got worse and worse. At the peak, I couldnt breath out of my nose at all, and sometimes I had such trouble breathing I thought I was having a panic attack.

I also had VERY severe eczema, which got even worse when my allergies got worse; at the very peak of all of this, I got a skin infection that hospitalized me for a month. After that was over, I instantly got another infection, which left me hopeless in life because I thought I would die if things kept going like that.

It has been a couple of years since then, and now I am completely healed from both atopic dermatitis and allergies, which include pet, indoor, and environmental allergies.

Today I will show you how you can potentially heal or at least improve your allergies like I did and how to get rid of the potentially number one cause of your allergies, which is mold.

If you want to know step by step how I healed my severe eczema and how others are doing the same through my example, join The Ultimate Eczema Protocol, where you get access to all of the resources I collected over the years of research, and a community with people who understand you.

What Is Mold?

Mold is a living fungus made of tiny filaments that grows in damp, warm places.

It has very bad health effects; when humans come in touch, it can cause inflammation and symptoms like a stuffy nose, coughing, wheezing, and itchy eyes.

In more severe cases, mold can trigger asthma attacks, potentionally life treathening alergic reactions, serious respiratory illnesses, and Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS).

A great example of a person who suffered from these effects is Mikhaila Fuller Peterson.

Sometimes mold on its own can start these conditions and not just make them worse.

How Mold Affects Your Allergies

Basically, when you inhale mold spores, your immune system can develop allergy-causing antibodies

Every exposure to mold can trigger histamine release, which causes the classic allergy symptoms like runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion.

Why some people react so much harder

Mold is terrible for everyone, but some people like you and me react worse than the average person.

First of all, there is a genetic aspect of this which affects roughly 24% of the total population. This means that the immune system of these people is not able to recognize and clear these toxins.

In the body of an optimally healthy person, this is not that big of a problem because their immune system will send antibodies that will get rid of the toxins.

The second reason is leaky gut. In short, leaky gut is gut damage that affects and sometimes completely creates problems like eczema, psoriasis, allergies, arthritis, and other inflammatory problems. Leaky gut, as the name says, occurs when gaps are created in your gut, which lets food you eat go into your bloodstream.

When food goes into your bloodstream, your body reacts with inflammation because it sees those food particles as foreign invaders.

The building side of the equation

Over 80% of buildings have at least some level of water damage, 30% with a past leak that caused mold or bacterial growth. Meaning most people have had a meaningful exposure at some point in their lives; this is so much worse when mold affects the room where you sleep, as it did to me for years.

Where Mold and Water Damage Actually Hide

Mold can be anywhere in your home, but these are the places you should be especially careful about.

The most common spots are shower grout, under every sink, laundry machine rubber seals (especially front-loaders), and toilet tanks.

The most notable less common and obvious spot is HVAC systems; they are less obvious because air circulated through a moldy HVAC gets distributed throughout an entire home, so it is harder to find the origin of that problem.

Warning signs when you are buying a house

The biggest warning signs that you need to be aware of when you are buying or searching for a home are: a musty or unexplained paint smell, bubbling or cracked paint, discolored grout, and dusty air duct vents.

These are the biggest red flags that you should keep in mind when buying a home.

Simple Ways to Reduce Mold and Ease Allergy Symptoms

There are multiple ways you can reduce mold and, with that, lower or even completely heal your allergy symptoms.

  • Control humidity
  • Fix leaks quickly
  • Fix your gut
  • Buy an air purifier

Control humidity

You should keep your indoor humidity under 50% because mold struggles to grow below that.

You can pretty effectively do this with a solid dehumidifier.

Fix leaks quickly

If you get a damp area somewhere in your home, you should fix it as soon as you can because mold is pretty fast at getting there.

The faster you do this, the less chance mold has to take hold.

Fix your gut

This one is incredibly important. Before I even knew about the negative effects of mold, I already healed for the most part from my severe allergies and eczema just because I fixed my leaky gut.

There is a lot to say about this topic, so it is best if you read my article to learn how to do that.

Buy an air purifier

Investing in a high-quality air purifier is the most important step you can take when dealing with mold.

Air purifiers can reduce allergies significantly by cleaning up your living space.

You should read my full article on air purifiers here.

Conclusion

Most people with allergies don’t recognize how big of a problem mold is for their health and how seriously this problem has to be dealt with.

A lot of autoimmune issues like allergies start from water-damaged houses even when the leak is not that bad.
